Grok Build

How UsageNow reads Grok Build tokens, model calls, models, and cost from the session logs Grok Build writes on your Mac.

On this page

UsageNow shows your Grok Build activity for today — tokens, model calls, the models that answered, and the cost xAI reported for them — and a 30-day history. Everything comes from the session logs Grok Build writes on your Mac. It doesn't show a usage limit.

Not yet verified against a live install

Grok Build support follows Grok Build's open source code for how it logs sessions, and is covered by tests, but hasn't yet been checked against real Grok Build sessions. If numbers look wrong, use Settings › About › Report a Problem.

Requirements#

  • Grok Build installed — the grok CLI
  • Used at least once, so it has logged a finished turn

Today's activity#

When a turn ends, Grok Build logs that turn's usage per model. UsageNow adds them up for:

  • tokens today — the whole prompt, cache reads and writes included, plus output
  • requests — model calls made today
  • most recent model and activity by model
  • ≈ cost — what xAI reported for the turn. A turn whose usage is incomplete is priced from UsageNow's table instead, when the model has a published price; otherwise the total reads partial.

What is read, and what isn't#

UsageNow reads only the turn_completed lines of each log, and from them only the token counts, model calls, cost, model names, and time. The turn's result text on the same line is never decoded, and neither is any other line — prompts, replies, and tool calls.

Grok Build's sign-in and settings are never opened.

No usage limit#

A Grok plan's weekly usage is shown only in your account settings on the web, and Grok Build keeps no copy of it on disk. The Grok Build section says Usage limits unavailable.

Where UsageNow looks#

UsageNow reads ~/.grok/sessions/<project>/<session>/updates.jsonl. It recognizes Grok Build as installed when ~/.grok exists, or when the grok CLI is in ~/.grok/bin, ~/.local/bin, Homebrew, /usr/local/bin, Bun, or a Node version under nvm.
